What is TerraPuri?

TerraPuri is an innovative socio-environmental observatory developed to centralize and facilitate access to information about projects and enterprises that are either being implemented or are in the process of applying for environmental authorization. Initially focused on the Açu region, this project is only the first step of a broader initiative that will soon expand to include other regions.

This platform offers the public simplified and comprehensive access to information related to these enterprises, consolidating data from federal, state, and municipal levels. On TerraPuri, you will have access to all documents related to environmental licensing processes and constant updates with the latest news from the sector.regiões.

Documentary "The Invisible Gas"

The documentary "The Invisible Gas" investigates the human and environmental impacts caused by the GNA I and GNA II thermoelectric plants, installed in the industrial complex of Porto do Açu, in São João da Barra (RJ). The film reveals, through testimonies from residents of the rural communities of Mato Escuro and Água Preta, how industrial expansion and the installation of the high-voltage power line have transformed the local way of life, generating inequalities, health risks, and loss of territory. Combining denunciation, visual poetry, and documentary photography, the work gives face and voice to those who live with the invisible effects of the industry — the gas that cannot be seen but is felt in the air.

Documentary "Açu of Sorrows"

The project "Açu of Sorrows" is a multimedia narrative documentary aimed at highlighting the social and environmental impacts of Brazil’s largest private port — the Port of Açu. The construction of this mega-enterprise displaced 400 small-scale farmers from their lands, which were unjustly expropriated by former billionaire Eike Batista, who later negotiated them with the private equity fund EIG Global Partners, represented by Prumo Logística. The farmers received no compensation from the state. This led to unprecedented violence in the region.

Why Açu as a starting point?

The Açu region, located in São João da Barra, was chosen as the starting point for the TerraPuri project due to the intense social and environmental conflicts caused by the development of the Port of Açu. Historically, this area was known for its robust agricultural production, which was vital to the rural economy of the state of Rio de Janeiro. With the construction of the port, it is estimated that around 1,500 small-scale farming families were displaced, facing long-term consequences due to eviction actions.

In 2023, a series of public hearings was held to discuss not only the environmental impact caused by the construction of the Port of Açu but also human rights violations, land ownership issues, and the interaction between the local population and public institutions. These events highlighted the complexity of the challenges faced by the community and reinforced the need for a careful and responsible approach to regional development.
