Why Açu as the Starting Point?

The Açu region, located in São João da Barra, was chosen as the starting point for the TerraPuri project due to the intense social and environmental conflicts generated by the development of the Port of Açu. Historically, this area was renowned for its robust agricultural production, which was vital to the rural economy of the state of Rio de Janeiro. With the construction of the port, it is estimated that around 1,500 small farming families were displaced, facing lasting consequences due to eviction actions.

In 2023, a series of public hearings were held to discuss not only the environmental impact brought by the construction of the Port of Açu but also human rights violations, land ownership issues, and the interaction between the local population and public institutions. These events highlighted the complexity of the challenges faced by the community and reinforced the need for a careful and responsible approach to regional development.

Documentary "Açu of Sorrows"

The project "Açu of Sorrows" is a Multimedia Narrative documentary aimed at highlighting the socio-environmental impacts of Brazil's largest private port, the Port of Açu. The construction of the mega-enterprise Port of Açu left 400 small-scale farmers without their lands, which were unjustly expropriated by former billionaire Eike Batista, who later negotiated them with the private equity fund EIG Global Partners, represented by Prumo Logística. The farmers received no compensation from the state. This led to unprecedented violence in the region.
